Sumi inksticks have long been revered for their enchanting black hues, described as having an "infinite number of colors within black." These inksticks, made by mixing soot with animal glue, are divided into two main types: oil-soot ink (Yuen-boku) and pine-soot ink (Shoen-boku). Oil-soot ink, made from the soot of burning vegetable oils, has fine, hard particles and ranges in color from glossy black to brownish and reddish tones. On the other hand, pine-soot ink made from burning pine branches and bark has larger and softer particles, offering matte bluish-blacks.
