**********

Having a deep knowledge of tools and art supplies will broaden your horizons when creating works and provide hints for your creativity.
In the summer of 2026, PIGMENT TOKYO will hold five workshops that can be enjoyed by both children and adults, focusing on brushes, crayons, silk painting, and suminagashi.

In the hands-on experience of making a "Brush" with a long-established Kyoto maker, and in a course that unravels the mechanism of color from the creating of "crayons," you will be able to further stimulate your creative desire by learning about the origins of familiar tools.
We also offer courses that allow you to take a closer look at traditional materials and experience their characteristics, such as the preparation and drawing techniques of "Eginu Silk Canvas", and "Suminagashi and Sunago", which discover accidental beauty.
Why not rediscover the charm of art materials and the skills of craftsmen and open the door to new forms of expression this summer?

For details on "Introduction to Eginu Silk Canvas (Porcelain Berry)" here

"Eginu" (silk canvas) is a type of silk fabric specifically made for painting. While it is thinner than the silk used for clothing, it possesses both a beautiful luster and flexibility. Although it offers many appealing qualities, such as a translucent texture and vibrant color payoff, it reacts strongly to moisture by shrinking. Therefore, using it for a artwork requires specialized skills and preparation.

In the workshop "Introduction to Eginu Silk Canvas," participants will paint on silk that has been pre-treated by the instructor. However, if you would like to incorporate this preparation process into your own artwork, we highly recommend the following course.

Production content

This is a course where you can deepen your understanding of Eginu through both lectures and practical skills, and experience the entire process up to the pre-painting stages. This is a valuable opportunity for you to take your time and learn how to handle painted silk, which there are few places where you can learn about it.

What you can learn in this course

・Putting picture silk on a wooden frame

Placing it in a wooden frame not only makes it easier to draw, but also creates a foundation for expression that takes advantage of the material's unique "transparency."
By mastering this technique, you will be able to create works that incorporate "Urazaishiki" and "Urahaku" techniques, which involve painting or foil stamping from the back of the silk. In addition, by placing the screen on a wooden frame, the screen will be kept floating, making it easier to create natural and beautiful gradations and blurs.

Sizing for silk canvas

By applying a "Dosa" sizing (bleeding prevention) treatment to raw silk, it is possible to prevent drawings from bleeding and improve the fixation of paint. By applying glue diluted with water to the entire surface, a film is created, creating a smooth surface that is easy to draw on. It also uses the property of silk, which shrinks when exposed to moisture, to even out the tension across the entire screen.

On the day of the event, you can take home the picture silk that you have pulled yourself as a "Dosa," still stretched on a wooden frame.
*We provide handheld paper bags to hold the wooden crates.

11:10 –12:00 Morning session (50 minutes)

・Silk canvas upholstery

To prevent shrinkage and distortion due to moisture, glue the wooden frame, secure it with thumbtacks, and cover it with silk. We use a No. F4 (333 x 242 mm) wooden frame that is easy to handle even for first-time users.

12:00 – 14:00 Lunch break/drying (120 minutes)

We will take a break to dry the painted silk that has been hung in the wooden frame.
Please feel free to spend your time shopping for art supplies that interest you, viewing art at nearby art facilities, and more.

14:00 – 16:00 Afternoon session (120 minutes)

Sizing for silk canvas

Dosa liquid, which is made by diluting glue with water, is applied to the entire screen to even out the texture and surface tension of the silk. It also serves to prevent drawings from blurring.

・Lecture

We will use materials to discuss everything from important points to consider when painting on silk to the best way to preserve your work. The instructor will provide samples that will help you understand the art materials that go well with each other, techniques unique to Eginu canvas, and tips.
Please feel free to use this service to expand your ideas for your work and take the results home with you to create them.
