Metal leaf is made by hammering metals like gold, platinum, silver, copper, and tin into extremely thin sheets. Pure gold leaf is the thinnest, about 0.1μm (0.0001mm) thick, and so light it can be blown away with a gentle breath. In Japan, metal leaf has a long history of being used in temples, shrines, Buddhist altars, crafts, and paintings.

There are various types according to the unique properties of metals, such as the metal leaves with subtle color variations achieved by combinations of metals and oxidized silver leaves with complex colors.
