Shin-iwa Mineral Pigments are created by firing glaze and metal oxides at high temperatures, then grinding and separating the particles in the same way natural mineral pigments are made. The pigments are extremely durable and offer a wider range of color tones not found in natural mineral pigments.

The particles are divided into ten grades based on size, ranging from coarse (No. 5) to fine powder (No.13), with the finest being Byaku which means white. Coarser particles produce deeper colors, while finer particles offer greater brightness. The pigments are often used individually to maintain their unique, sand-like texture.
