Explore Pébéo Alkyd Resin Paint

Alkyd resins are synthetic resins used in paints, adhesives and plasticizers.

It is one of the most widely used resins for industrial paints because of its versatility and fast drying time.

In fine art, alkyd resins serve as an oil painting medium that speeds up the drying process when mixed with traditional drying oils like linseed oil.

Among all the alkyd resin paints, the two most distinctive lineups are the Vitrail and Prisme series produced by the French paint manufacturer, Pébéo.

Vitrail paint can be applied on canvas, paper, glass and metal. It is known for its high transparency and glossy finish, creating a lacquer-like texture that adds a captivating dimension to artworks. The paint has a low viscosity but is thick enough to allow for the use of brushes or droppers to create bold gestural lines. You can also apply it directly from the bottle or use a painting knife for more intricate techniques. Since they are oil-based paints, the Vitrail series can be layered over water-based paints, such as acrylics.

Prisme series is an opaque, glossy, solvent-based paint that develops a honeycomb pattern as the paint dries. Like Vitrail, it has a high consistency and can be applied with a dropper or brush.

To achieve clear honeycomb patterns, apply the paint in thicker coats.

When applied to canvas, the colors will appear as the picture shown. The surface drying time is approximately 6 hours.
Due to its high transparency, you can achieve multi-layered colors by mixing Vitrail and Prisme paints together. This combination produces a smooth gloss and a durable film coat that water-based paints do not have.

The paint adheres well even on a smooth surface like transparent acrylic boards, due to the presence of alkyd resin. Applying a glass primer beforehand can also help the paint affix better to these smooth surfaces and make it easier to apply color.

Other than the usage in fine art, Pébéo's Vitrail and Prism series are great for crafts and hobby use.

A sample made by “WAGAYA FACTORY,” a studio that specializes in sculpting monsters and other figures, is featured in the PIGMENT ARTICLES titled “DIY Art and Craft Ideas with Pebeo Prisme & Vitrail.”

Vitrail  paint was used to create the coloration reminiscent of a scarab beetle, while Clear Red from GSI Creos Mr. Color was applied for the eyes. The base features a soft vinyl-colored gold, including the belly area.

As mentioned above, the versatility of alkyd resin allows for exciting combinations with other paints. We invite you to explore and enjoy the enchanting textures of the Vitrail and Prisme series, which stand apart as unique, non-oil and non-acrylic paints.
