Silk is a natural fiber made of cocoon by silkworm. We are familiar with Silk as a material for clothing. However, there was a close connection with painting. There is a long history that silk has been used as a base material. One of the most attractive things about Silk is that it creates a beautiful layer of colors and can be painted on both sides. The technique of drawing on the front side is called "Omote-Shikishoku" and drawing on the backside is called "Ura-Shikishoku". The backside color becomes transparent to frontside, and colors pile up in layers by applying more “Omote-Shikishoku ” (drawing on the front side).

This workshop is for beginners. Let’s challenge the “Omote-Shikishoku” and “Ura-Shikishoku”. Silk is one of the materials that require preparation time rather than Washi-Paper. However, don’t put yourself on guard. Once you learn the procedure, it won’t be that difficult. We are sure that you will be attracted by the Silk’s original expressions.

The luster of Silk is often compared to a Pearl. Join us and experience to draw smoothly on this beautiful and soft base materials.
