Master the White and Control the Color
-The Aesthetics of Texture in Color and Particle-
Japanese painting is known as the painting that uses natural pigments. Back in time, these natural pigments were also used in China, Europe and other places in the world, but they were replaced by affordable synthetic pigment, whose particle is even and fine after the Industrial Revolution. In Japan, however, drawing the line between these mainstreams, painters utilized the characteristics of animal glue as a binder and developed the pigment that is focused on the texture. As a result, we now have unique techniques of coloring and materials such as the mixture of pigments and animal glues.
In this workshop, focusing on the gofun and mineral pigments, we will learn the techniques that have cultivated in Japan through both theory and practice. In Japanese paintings, just like the saying “Starts with gofun and ends with gofun”, much importance has been placed on how to knead the gofun and how to use them. Normally, gofun is kneaded in the technique called “Hyakutataki” (beating a hundred times). In this workshop, we will learn the technique not the Hyakutataki but the special one that has been handed down by word of mouth. Also, we will introduce the technique called Guenogu and Guzumi to create a neutral color with gofun and many other techniques related to gofun.
Mineral pigments are made by pulverizing a rock, and the color tone is determined according to the size of the particle. Thus, as well as the color depth, there co-exists the texture created by the small and large of the particle. It has a unique character that other paints do not have. The coloring is also interesting such as “Tamenuri”, “Tarashikomi” (marbling) and “Horinuri” (the technique where underdrawings in sumi ink is not painted over) and we will introduce widely from traditional techniques to the front-line techniques.
As you can see, this workshop is very fruitful, where you will be able to learn various techniques related to pigments of Japanese paintings in a day. This workshop is for anyone who paints Japanese paintings, who wishes to start Japanese paintings in the future and people who want to incorporate these materials into your work. We hope to offer knowledges to broaden your expression. Please do take part in.
