Connecting Artists and Materials ~PIGMENT Material Conference Vol.2~

2020-01-31

PIGMENT is simultaneously a laboratory for exploring “expression in color and matiere” as well as an academy, a museum, and a store combined into a comprehensive facility for creativity.

We are offering various art materials of all ages and countries. However, the customers visiting us are not only from the people in the fine arts.

People from various fields, such as makeup artists, designers, architects, fans of models visit us as well.

“PIGMENT Material Conference” is an event that we invite those professionals and offer them opportunities to be experience the art materials in our store. This time, we invited three monster character's costume creators working in the alternative space in Nagano, Tokyo, Gaigan Yamazaki from“WAGAYA KOBO (My home laboratory)” (https://gigan-yamazaki.hatenablog.com/), Kaiserl Kaiser (https://twitter.com/Kaisel_Kaiser), and Pashimi (https://twitter.com/nicesharp) to try our effect pigments.

 “WAGAYA KOBO”’s hideout.

They selected the colors that matches their monsters by looking at the original sample book of Effect pigments.

After that, they painted the pigments they chose on the body, which is their base materials by using PVA and Acrylic Emulsion.

They usually buy the color materials in the hardware store, so they were surprised that creating paints is not that difficult and the price is affordable.

You may think the pigments in our store are all expensive, but making your paints by pigments has a lot of flexibility and much reasonable rather than buying paint tubes on the market.

Then they started to paint on the monster’s body parts.

The costumes of monsters are usually created by piling up soft materials such as jersey, tights, urethane or sponge.

The black color turned into a beautiful iridescent color in less than an hour!

Beautiful effect were created by coating layers of effect pigments.

One of the characteristics of effect pigments is that the color changes depends on lights and angles, and somehow they instantly produced the texture which recalls the texture of creatures. We could catch a glimpse of the profoundness of color sense made by monster creators.

This event is invitation-only, however, we have material experts at the store who are able to answer your question. If you have any trouble or concerns about colors and materials, please feel free to visit PIGMENT TOKYO.
